Heavy Military Presence Around Meeting of Global Elite at Davos

Switzerland has mobilised up to 5,000 soldiers to secure the area around the Alpine town of Davos, where world political and economic leaders gather this week. The Swiss Defence Ministry also ordered a lockdown of the airspace from Tuesday to the following Monday to ensure security for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum from January 26. “In the surroundings of Davos, army soldiers are protecting infrastructure and providing services for logistics,” said the ministry in a statement. “The air force will also carry out surveillance flights and air transport,” it added. The security operation is being carried out in cooperation with the military in nearby Austria.
Bill Gates promises $10 billion for vaccines

Bill and Melinda Gates said on Friday they would spend $10 billion over the next decade to develop and deliver vaccines, an increased commitment that reflects progress in the pipeline of products for immunizing children in the developing world. Over the past 10 years, the Microsoft co-founder’s charity has committed $4.5 billion to vaccines and has been instrumental in establishing the GAVI alliance, a public-private partnership that channels money for vaccines in poor countries.
Davos police commander found dead

The police commander in charge of security at the World Economic Forum in Davos has been found dead in his hotel room, local authorities have said. Markus Reinhardt, 61, had been head of police in the Swiss canton of Graubunden since 1984. “All indications point to a suicide,” local police said in a statement.
