KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (September 23) – Governors from all six of Afghanistan’s southern provinces met at Kandahar Airfield on August 5 to discuss agricultural development in southern Afghanistan. The Governors met over several hours along with other Afghan officials and representatives of the International Security Assistance Force. Present were Governors Sultan Ali Oruzgani – Daykundi, Tooryali Wesa - Kandahar, Gulab Mangal - Helmand, Dastagir Azad – Nimruz, Assadulah Hamdam – Uruzgan, and Mohammad Ashraf Nasseri – Zabul. Commander Task Force - Uruzgan, Brigadier Kees Van Den Heuvel, and Deputy Governor of Oruzgan, Khoday Rahim sat side-by-side during a recent Shura held in the Southern Baluchi Valley Region. Within ten days of the close of Operation Jenub Fayda in the Mirabad Valley Region, Australian representatives from the 1st Mentoring Task Force (MTF1), AusAid and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade joined with Afghan government officials, Afghan Army and Police representatives as well as Dutch representatives and community leaders for a Shura to discuss security and development issues in the area. The Shura, involving about 50 people proved a success with many of the discussions reaching agreement with a clear demonstration of a coming together of thoughts and goals between many of the attendees. Jenub Fayda (Southern Advantage) was a major combined ANA and MTF1 security operation that was designed to facilitate Afghan government development opportunities in liaison with the local community. On Thursday, August 27, Ambassador Eikenberry traveled to Badghis Province, along with Member of Parliament from Badghis Ms. Azita Rafat, to meet with Governor Arman, visit U.S. funded projects in the province, meet with Provincial Reconstruction Team personnel, and visit with local officials and citizens. During this one-day trip to Qala-e-Now, the Ambassador visited the U.S.-supported Civil Service Training Center, where he met with students and faculty to hear about the English, management and computer training they receive. The Ambassador and the Governor also visited the local Afghan National Police Headquarters and hospital. The two men also walked through the bazaar in Qala-e-Now to meet and greet bystanders and purchase several of the superb melons for which Badghis is known. During the visit, Mrs. Eikenberry took a special trip to the local girls high school to meet the students and faculty and discuss education and women’s issues.
