WellPoint Inc. is the largest U.S. health insurance provider in terms of commercial membership.1 It is the largest member of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, a federation of 39 health insurance providers. In 14 states, it is a Blue Cross or BCSB licensee. In other states, it provides coverage under the Unicare name. Wellpoint offers plans such as HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) and PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) to individuals, employers, and recipients of Medicare and Medicaid.2 It was formed when WellPoint Health Networks, Inc. merged into Anthem, Inc., with the surviving Anthem adopting the name, WellPoint, Inc. and began trading its common stock under the WLP symbol on December 1, 2004. On April 13, 2009 it was announced that WellPoint had reached a definitive agreement under which St. Louis based Express Scripts will acquire WellPoint’s NextRx subsidiaries for $4.675 billion.3
