PATROL BASE SHARK, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - A small girl gazes at the Marines with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, during a recent patrol. The father holding the child greeted every Marine that passed by his home and allowed one Marine to hold the young infant for a brief moment.

PATROL BASE SHARK, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - A small girl looks back after receiving a candy bar from a Marine outside the base. The Marines give these small gifts to help gain the trust of young children, who are the future of Afghanistan. The children have become much more receptive to Marines after a decade in the country.

PATROL BASE SHARK, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - A local boy walks through a poppy field toward a Marine in a small village nearby. Children frequently come out to greet the Marines and Afghan National Army soldiers attached to the unit. The Marine later took his right glove off and extended his hand toward the boy to greet him. The boy timidly covered his smiling face and returned the gesture by slowly reaching for the Marine
