Germany’s Leading Political Blogs
Open Source Center Media Aid 5 August 2010
The blogs selected and profiled in this guide are, at the time of this report, among the most well-known German-language political blogs and were selected for inclusion based on an assessment of several indicators, which are detailed in the methodology statement. The blogs profiled here are among Germany’s most influential independent political blogs and therefore have some potential to shape public opinion and debate on political issues in Germany. However, it should be noted that, given the challenges in establishing linkage between online content and realworld interactions and events, the degree of influence of blogs is difficult to quantify.
Web Politics
In German, the concept of web politics (netzpolitik) is more than simply the use of the Internet by politicians and political parties for idea dissemination and campaign purposes. Web politics refers to the spectrum of issues concerning the current and future state of the Internet; development and adaptation of Internet technologies, Internet standards, and infrastructure; and the impact digital technologies and the Internet have on law, politics, economics, and society. Some examples of web politics issues are threats to digital privacy, government or business attempts at Internet regulation, government Internet censorship, and anticrime and antiterrorism legislation. Specific concerns addressed on political blogs include data retention and online searches of suspects’ computers, digital public surveillance, net neutrality, and the challenges of protecting individual rights in a digital society.
Blogs Focusing on Web Politics
Netzpolitik.org
Started in 2002 by digital rights activist and professional blogger Markus Beckedahl, the German-language blog Netzpolitik.org (Web Politics), which describes itself as “a political platform for freedom and openness in the digital age,” seeks to inform Internet users of laws that could impact their online experience and privacy [1](netzpolitik.org, 6 May 2005). As an advocacy blog for Internet issues, Netzpolitik encourages netizens to organize in order to lobby for personal data protection, digital rights, and free expression in cyberspace [2] (spiegel.de, 8 July 2009). Traditional German media and the German Government repeatedly engage with Beckedahl on web regulation policy and digital privacy issues [3] (Spiegel Online, 19 January 2010). Beckedahl is currently a member of the German Parliament’s recently-formed Internet and Digital Society Working Group, whose task is to study issues involving the Internet, society, and politics and make recommendations to the German Government [4] (bundestag.de, 9 June 2010).
Netzpolitik.org is arguably Germany’s leading weblog, regardless of category.
- A number of online blog and website ranking systems, each using different criteria, place Netzpolitk.org at the top of the German blogosphere [5] [6] (wikio.de, 26 July; deutscheblogcharts.de, 21 July).
- Netzpolitik.org is the recipient of several prestigious awards given to advocacy issue blogs, including the Reporters Without Borders Freedom Blog Award in 2005 for best international blog, and the Nuremberg Media Academy’s Alternative Media Award in 2010 [7] [8] (rsf.org, 15 June 2005; alternativer-medienpreis.de, 2010).
- In 2008, Netzpolitik.org was nominated for the Grimme Media Research Institute’s prestigious Online [9] Award (grimme-insitute.de, 2008).
Spreeblick.com
Begun in 2002 by German blogger Johnny Haeusler, Spreeblick.com presents articles, opinions, and features that address various topics, many of which are often picked up later by traditional media [10] (grimme-online-award.de). While the majority of Spreeblick.com’s blog posts do not explicitly address political topics, those that do tend to have a domestic political focus or take on issues affecting Internet freedom, net neutrality, and Internet censorship. Despite Spreeblick.com’s limited focus on politics and Internet politics, its status as a prominent German blog, and the readership that goes with this distinction, justify its inclusion in a listing of leading German political blogs. A 2008 study on conditions for influence in the German blogosphere included Spreeblick.com among blogs it assessed as having, by sheer virtue of their popularity, the potential to raise the public’s attention to the political topics presented on the blogs [11] (German Policy Studies, 2008). In addition to its politically oriented content, Spreeblick.com’s topics include music, pop culture, technology, and occasional write-ups of online services and offline products. In 2006, Spreeblick.com was honored with the Grimme Online Award [12] (spreeblick.com, 2006). In addition to running the blog, Haeusler moderates a weekly two-hour Radio Berlin-Brandenburg radio show whose main topic is the German blogosphere. Podcasts of the show are available at Spreeblick.com.
Carta.info
Carta.info is an elite, nonpartisan, independent German weblog that primarily focuses on issues facing a digital society, media economics, online political campaigns, and the Internet’s impact on traditional media and political and economic communication [13] [14] (Facebook, 22 June; grimme-institut.de, 2009). Blog postings on Carta.info are the contributions of numerous prestigious scholars and journalists, who use the blog as a platform to present their original analyses, reports, and occasional research findings. Carta.info was founded in 2008 by Robin Meyer-Lucht, media expert and founder of the Berlin Institute, an independent media think tank and consulting firm focusing on German-speaking media environments [15] [16] (bwlzweinull.de, 28 October 2008; berlin-institute.de, 22 June). In 2009, Carta.info was awarded the prestigious Grimme Online Award for best editorial and authorship. In 2010, it was awarded the German Government-owned broadcaster Deutsche Welle’s Best of Blogs (BoBs) Award (thebobs.com, 2010). [17]
Media, Government Critical Blogs
Fefes Blog
Fefes Blog (blog.fefe.de) is a popular left-leaning online political-technical journal maintained by Felix (Fefe) von Leitner. Von Leitner is an information technology security expert, data privacy advocate, and affiliate of a German hacker group, the Chaos Computer Club. The blog is starkly spartan in appearance, generally consisting of hyperlinks to online content, accompanied by von Leitner’s short content description and his own personal comments, which are often polemic and insulting. The blog’s linked-to content typically is critical of or unflattering to the German Government, free-market capitalism, and US and Israeli policies. Occasionally Fefes Blog links to content that advances conspiracy theories and, interestingly, von Leitner has admitted to occasionally linking to known hoaxes to challenge his readers’ discernment [18] [19] Given his convictions about digital privacy, von Leitner does not collect metrics for his blog. However, in an interview, he estimated that his blog gets about 120,000 visitors per day. The blog’s popularity could also be inferred because websites linked to by Fefes Blog have been known to crash due to a spike in visitor traffic (blog.fefe.de, 29 June; dctp.tv, 28 June). [20] (dctp.tv, 16 February). In 2009 Fefes Blog posted a video of police assaulting a peaceful protestor at an anti-surveillance demonstration in Berlin. The video went viral in Germany and elsewhere and was even blogged about on US tech blogs [21] (focus.de, 14 September 2009). The attention the video received resulted in a criminal investigation against the officer depicted [22] (taz.de, 13 September 2009).
Bildblog.de
Through critical analysis of media content, Bildblog.de, a self-described “watch blog for German media,” seeks to hold Germany’s most popular tabloid, Bild, and other major German media accountable for their reporting [23] [24] (bildblog.de; focus.de, 26 January 2010). Run by professional journalists, Bildblog.de investigates select stories appearing in major German media, and exposes mistakes, inaccuracies, alleged biases, and examples of poor journalism. According to the blog’s founder, media journalist Steffan Niggemeier, although Bildblog.de has had little effect in improving the quality of Bild’s journalism, German users of social media cite Bildblog.de in their online discussions to challenge others who use Bild as a source of information [25] (webcast.oii.ox.ac.uk, 18 September 2009). Bildblog.de is consistently highly ranked among German website and blog-ranking services and received the Grimme Online Award for the category “Information” in 2005 [26] [27] [28] (wikio.de, 26 July; deutscheblogcharts.de, 21 July; grimme-institut.de, 30 June 2005).
Nachdenkseiten.de
Nachdenkseiten.de (Pages To Think About) is a left-leaning blog focusing on economic, political, and social issues. Nachdenkseiten.de posts daily essays and commentaries, which are frequently about Germany’s economic policies. In addition, Nachdenkseiten.de also posts “tips of the day,” a list of current topics, which link to news and politically themed websites where the corresponding articles are found. The “tips of the day” topic links are also sometimes accompanied by short editorial commentaries.
Nachdenkseiten.de is openly critical of the mainstream German media, which it alleges has lost its objectivity and is subject to “manipulation” by the “opinion influencing” campaigns of special interest groups [29] (nachdenkseiten.de, 30 June). The blog staunchly defends Germany’s social market economic model and is highly critical of attempts to alter it. Acknowledging its elevated status in a somewhat niche German political blogosphere, in 2008 the online version of the German news magazine Der Spiegel described Nachdenkseiten.de as “one of the few known German political blogs” [30] (spiegel.de, 21 June 2008). Yet, a few lines later the same article disparaged the blog, calling it an “Internet community for disappointed Social Democrats.” Blog postings to Nachdenkseiten.de are primarily the work of economist and former Social Democratic Party (SPD) member of the German Parliament, Albrecht Mueller, and lawyer and former SPD politician Wolfgang Lieb (nachdenkseiten.de).
Spiegelfechter.com
Spiegelfechter.com (from spiegelfechterei, to deceive by the appearance of credibility) is a media-critical German blog offering opinionated analysis, commentary, and background information on the issues of current global and domestic politics and economics. Spiegelfechter.com’s founder, blogger Jens Berger, charges that the mainstream media often lacks objectivity and believes that “profiteers” are detrimentally “guiding politics and influencing the media” to the point that it has become “increasingly more difficult to distinguish truth from spin or willful lies” [31] (Spiegelfechter.com). Due to this conviction, Berger began Spiegelfechter.com in 2007 with the goal of presenting information and opinions at variance with that of the mainstream German media. Ultimately, Berger aims to see the creation of an online “counter public” (Gegenoefentlichkeit) who will challenge what he sees as established media’s “opinion monopoly” [32] [33] (Spiegelfechter.com; blog.politik.de, 14 February 2008). Spiegelfechter.com is highly ranked among German website and blog-ranking services and is referred to by other leading German political blogs [34] [35] [36] (wikio.de, 26 July 2010; deutscheblogcharts.de, 21 July 2010; spreeblick.com, 17 April 2007; nachdenkseiten.de, 9 February 2009).
Politically Incorrect
Pi-news.net (Politically Incorrect) is an independent, widely read, German-language, right-wing populist political blog. Openly anti-Islamic and anti-leftist, Pi-news.net critically analyzes and challenges mainstream media coverage and government positions on societal and political issues. Pi-news.net accuses the German Government and media of caving in to the dictates of political correctness by willful disregard or denial of what the blog sees as the Islamic and leftist menace. In contrast, the blog presents itself as a source of suppressed information about sensitive subjects, such as immigrant criminality, violence in Islam, and failures of Muslim immigrant integration. Pi-news.net plays on German sensibilities and attempts to exploit German anxieties to convey its message that Islam and leftists are serious threats to German society [37] (Pi-news.net, 15 May 2009). PI favorably portrays and supports efforts by the United States and Israel to combat violent Islamic extremism. Pi-news.net has a large, active readership, which frequently assists the blog’s founder and main editor, Stefan Herre, in collecting media reporting on issues of blog interest [38] (tagesspiegel.de, 24 April 2008). The German mainstream media have been highly critical of Pi-news.net’s messages, and the blog has come the under scrutiny of German Homeland Intelligence [39] [40] (tagesspiegel.de, 2 January 2009; abgeordnetenwatch.de, 7 November 2008).
Ruhrbarone.de
The blog Ruhrbarone.de (Ruhr Area Barons) is a multiple-author blog that focuses on events in the Ruhr Area of Germany and on political matters in the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW). Ruhrbarone.de is a high-quality blog whose many contributors are well-known professional journalists and editors who live in NRW’s Ruhr Area. Major mainstream German media, including NRW-based German public broadcaster West Deutscher Rundfunk and German news magazine Der Spiegel, have featured stories on Rurhbarone.de, quoted its contributors, and linked to the blog from their web pages [41] [42] [43] (wdr.de, 10 May; spiegel.de, 15 July 2009, 9 April). Germany’s top blog, Netzpolitik.org, also references Ruhrbarone.de [44] (Netzpolitik.org, 3 March). A survey of blog content finds several examples of investigative journalism, with many articles pointing out inconsistencies, falsehoods, and other improprieties allegedly committed by members of NRW’s political establishment. For example, Ruhrbarone.de has published embarrassing leaked internal memos from NRW’s Christian Democratic Union party and has revealed that NRW’s SPD leader Hannelore Kraft had changed her online resume, insinuating an attempt to gloss over her relationship with a scandal-plagued firm [45] [46] [47](Ruhrbarone.de, 4 March; spiegel.de, 9 April; Ruhrbarone.de, 28 June 2009). In an attempt at political gain, political parties have exploited the unflattering attention Ruhrbarone.de has paid rival parties or politicians 48 (spiegel.de, 15 July 2009). In addition, the attention given to Ruhrbarone.de by offended politicians, as evidenced by cease-and-desist letters and other legal warnings sent to its authors, further suggests that Ruhrbarone.de is taken seriously by NRW’s political elite and is affecting the political environment in NRW, a populous German state whose political trends can have national influence [49] (Ruhrbaron.de, 28 June 2009).
Fixmbr.de
Fixmbr.de (F!xmbr) is the product of German bloggers Oliver Herold and Christian Sickendieck, who primarily blog about German politics, technology, and digital privacy issues. Although Herold and Sickendieck declare their political ideologies as being more in line with those of German Social Democrats, the Greens, and the Left Party, they often use Fixmbr.de as a web platform to harshly criticize these parties and their politicians for certain positions and actions [50] [51] (Fixmbr.de, 7 July; identi.ca, 9 July). Fixmbr.de steadily remains among the top 50 German blogs, according to the German blog-ranking website Deutscheblogcharts.de [52] (Deutscheblogcharts.de, 9 July). In 2010, Fixmbr.de was nominated for Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle’s Best of Blogs Award [53] (thebobs.com, March).
Methodology
An informed decision to use an online blog-ranking website as a starting point for an overview of the blogosphere requires a basic understanding of what it is that the websites claim to measure. All factors and criteria behind the compilations of top blog lists must be considered and the researcher must decide which metrics are most suitable for the purposes of the study. Websites that offer blog rankings generally compile these lists by measuring and weighing various criteria and using differing sets of data; for example, some ranking websites count page views, while others count numbers of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed subscriptions. Sometimes ranking websites only include registered blogs, or they base their rankings on the web behaviors of Internet users who have downloaded their specific toolbar application. No tool or service has 100 percent of the data on Internet content and netizens’ online activities. The effect is that there is no single definitive and exclusively authoritative list of top German blogs from which to begin a study of the German blogosphere. Finally, the definitions of descriptive phrases such as “top blogs” or “most influential blogs” will also vary depending on what or who is being measured.
Deutscheblogcharts.de, which presents a weekly hand-selected ranking of the 100 most linked-to German-language blogs, was chosen for this media guide as an initial reference for identifying Germany’s leading political blogs. Unlike some online web ranking tools, which use metrics such as page visits and RSS subscriptions that can be more easily manipulated and artificially inflated, Deutscheblogcharts.de bases its rankings on how often a blog or website quotes or links to a particular blog. Arguably, quotes from and links to a blog are a positive indicator of that blog’s relevance to, and authority among, other bloggers and netizens. Deutscheblogcharts.de focuses exclusively on German-language blogs, which made it particularly relevant to this project.
The first 50 blogs listed on Deutscheblogcharts.de were assessed to determine the extent to which at least some of their content could be characterized as political in nature. Blogs identified as having apparent political content were assessed against several additional criteria to determine their suitability for inclusion and profiling; these factors included respected media establishments and institutes’ formal recognition for excellence in online publishing, the degree of online visitor engagement, indications of the blog’s offline impact, and the attention given to a blog or blogger by the established mainstream media, members of the German Government,
or other high-profile German netizens.
